HIIT vs Transformer Pilates

Updated

Both are hard and both keep your heart rate up, but they get there differently. HIIT uses fast bursts — often jumping — and short rests. Transformer Pilates is high intensity and low impact: slow, loaded movements under spring resistance, short rests, no jumping. If your knees, back or recovery limit how often you can do HIIT, the Transformer lets you train hard four or five times a week.

How they differ

HIIT gets its intensity from speed and impact: sprints, jumps, burpees. Transformer Pilates gets it from load and time under tension: a four-count lunge against springs until the muscle fatigues. Both are demanding; only one involves landing.

Results

HIIT is efficient conditioning. Transformer Pilates builds strength and definition in the legs, glutes, arms and core, with your heart rate high because the sets run back to back. Many women in Doha combine them: one or two HIIT sessions for conditioning, two or three Transformer classes for strength.

Joints and recovery

Impact is what makes HIIT hard to repeat daily. With no jumping, Transformer Pilates is easy on knees, hips and backs, so recovery is quick and you can train most days — indoors, high above the heat on the 29th floor of W Doha.

Questions

Is Transformer Pilates a HIIT workout?
It is high intensity and low impact: short rests and sets to fatigue, but slow movements and no jumping.
Which burns more calories?
It depends on the session and the person. Both keep your heart rate high; Transformer Pilates adds strength work that HIIT usually lacks.
Can I do both?
Yes. Put Transformer classes on the days between HIIT sessions — there is no impact to recover from.
